GUIDING STATEMENTS: The start of the new academic year sees the British School introduce a new set of ‘Guiding Statements’ which will be the driving force behind the education that we offer over the coming years.  These statements (Mission, Vision and Values) were created from the collaborative efforts of 10 different working groups, representing the different stakeholders present in the School (primary students, secondary students, alumni, parents, local staff, international staff, administrative staff, leadership team, owners, Advisory Council).  The new guiding statements are:

Mission:  The BSCR is dedicated to developing globally aware, multilingual, lifelong learners with the key skills to fulfill their potential

Vision:  The BSCR will be a leader in educational innovation with a culture of excellence characterised by personalised learning

Values:   Creativity, Independence, Honesty, Respect, Responsibility

BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHTS: Our annual Back to School nights will be taking place next week.  These evenings offer a chance to learn about what is new in the School for this year and also for parents and teachers to meet. All meetings will start at 6:30 pm in the Auditorium before moving to classrooms.

COMMUNITY SERVICE - ACADEMIC STAFF: In the week of the 14th of January, 110 British School academic staff members took part in a range of different service activities around the central valley.  The intention of this day was to not only make a positive contribution to the local community but also to provide staff members with a greater insight as to what our students experience with their community service work projects throughout the year.  We would like to extend our thanks both to our staff as well as the following organisations who facilitated our service work on these days: Hogar Carlos María Ulloa, Hogar CUNA, Esperanza Urbana, InBio Parque, Centro de Formación Juvenil Zurquí and Amigos del Río Torres.

IRAZU HOUSE – 2018 WINNERS: Congratulations to Irazu House on winning the 2018 House Shield.  In recognition of their victory, all Irazu students (Primary and Secondary) may come to School in non-uniform on Friday the 1st of February.

WINDSCREEN STICKERS: The official stickers (calcomanías) required to identify parents’ vehicles to the school guards and other officials of the School are available from the School Office.

AFTER SCHOOL CARE: After School Care is now available for all Early Years and Primary students until 5:00 pm each day.  Further information will be shared during the Back to School nights.

SCHWAN CUP (MEETING ON TUESDAY 5TH OF FEBRUARY): This year the British School of Costa Rica is planning on taking two Primary Year 5 football teams (1 x female & 1 x male) to the Schwan's USA Cup in Blaine, Minnesota.  The provisional dates for this trip are from 15th of July until 21st of July.  We will provide some basic information at the Upper Primary Back to School Night (Thursday) for all interested Year 5 parents and then we will have a follow up meeting on 5th of February at 6:30 pm in the Auditorium, with the Costa Rican representative for the Schwan's USA Cup to provide more details.

SCHOOL UNIFORM – SECONDARY STUDENTS ONLY: We have been informed by our uniform supplier, Tonka, that the new School uniform shorts will not be available for purchase until the start of February.  We apologize for any inconvenience that this delay will cause.  At the same time, we would like to take the opportunity to clarify that all secondary students are expected to have at least one pair of School trousers which should be worn for formal events such as Awards Ceremonies, when representing the School at external events or on certain field trips.

BSCR COMMUNITY CHOIR: Many of you will have seen our choir perform last year at the Music Department concert in September.  This year we would like to continue to develop this ensemble and we are inviting you to come and join us.  There is no need for an audition, you do not need to have singing lessons or 'be a good singer'.  All that is required of you is enthusiasm to sing and enjoy yourself.  Our rehearsals will be on Wednesdays between 3:00 pm and 4:00 pm in school.  If you would like to join this group please contact Mr. Borrington (

Also we would be very interested to hear from any instrumentalists (especially but not only, wind instruments, Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone) who would like to perform with a community group here in school.  Please contact Mr. Borrington if this interests you.

SECONDARY AFTER SCHOOL CLUBS: After School clubs will begin during the week of the 4th of February.  There are several changes to the clubs in secondary this year with an increased focus on Representative Teams and Community Clubs.  Teams that represent the School will have external licensed coaches and will focus on the development of skills and teamwork.  There will be an After School Club Fair for students on Monday 28th of January during lunch break in the School Gymnasium so students can learn about the different activities on offer and sign up for any in which they may be interested.
