General
Health Week
Next week our Learning Community will be celebrating Health Week with a number of activities aimed at promoting the physical and mental health of our community. Planned activities include daily aerobics sessions, a talk about nutrition and various sporting competitions.
Children’s Day – Non-Uniform Day
Childrens’ Day is on Friday 8th of September. On this day, all students can come to School in their own choice of “appropriate” clothing. (Please note that Year 1 and Year 10 will still have PE on this day so they may want to come in something suitable for sport or, alternatively, bring a change of clothing for their PE lesson).
Primary
Staff Training
On Wednesday 23rd of August, the school’s Student Development Service (SDS) organised a workshop for Early Years and Primary staff with Laura Piedra, a specialist in developmental disorders and the Autistic Spectrum. Laura shared with staff a range of behavioural strategies to support children with these characteristics.
Parent Workshop (Y2 to Y5 Parents) – ‘The Family: An Essential Part in the Conflict Resolution Process’
We would like to invite all Year 2 to Year 5 parents to attend the parent workshop ‘The Family: An Essential Part in the Conflict Resolution Process’. This workshop will be facilitated by Gabriela Gutiérrez and Andreína Azofeifa from our Student Development Services (SDS) Department. This workshop is on Tuesday 5th of August at 8:30 am in the Auditorium and will be conducted in Spanish (please let us know if you require an English translation – sds@bscr.ed.cr). We hope to see you there!
Colibrí Primary Math Olympiad
Congratulations to Naima Alvarez (Year 5) and Kevin Brown (Year 6) for placing in the top 10% nationwide in the first round of the Colibrí Primary Math Olympiad. Well done on a great competition! We wish all of the British School of Costa Rica Primary Math Olympiad Team well in the second competition on the 9th of September, at the Yorkín School.
Parent Workshops: Parents – A Powerful Influence
Thank you to all Early Years and Year 1 parents who attended our SDS Parent workshop on Thursday – we hope that you found it to be an enjoyable and productive experience.
Primary Talent Show
The Primary Talent Show will take place during the afternoon of the 8th of September (Children’s Day). Unfortunately, due to space issues we are only able to invite parents of the performers to the show. However, we will share photos via social media after the event.
Secondary
Parent Workshop
Last Tuesday 29th of August, our Secondary SDS Department organized and conducted a workshop for Secondary parents about the prevention of drug use in adolescents. We had the assistance of more than 25 parents who shared ideas that have worked for them to avoid these situations with their kids, and learned some useful new strategies on how to deal with this topic at home. Many thanks to the parents who attended and we hope to develop new workshops in the near future with different schedules so that all parents can attend.
OLCOMA
Good luck to all students (Year 7 to Year 12) participating in the OLCOMA Maths Olympics this week. We know how hard you have worked and we are sure that you will do an excellent job.
NHS Induction Ceremony
On Thursday of next week, we will be inducting our latest cohort into the BSCR National Honour Society Chapter. The ceremony, which celebrates scholarship, character, leadership and service, will take place at 8:15 am in the School Auditorium and the parents of all participating students are invited to attend.
