Whole School

Virtual Learning
We would like to thank all members of our Community for their support with virtual learning last week.  We recognise that this method of learning is far from ideal, particularly with very little notice, but we were delighted that the majority of students were able to continue with their learning with relatively little disruption.

Health and Safety
We would like to remind all members of our Community that the use of facemasks is currently mandatory for all students when on campus, in order to reduce the risk of transmission.  As a result, students in all year levels are expected to come to School wearing an appropriate facemask each day.

Early Years and Primary

Uniform Clarification
Following on from the information that was sent to parents regarding uniforms this week we would like to clarify that students from Early Years 3 to Year 5 also have the option of wearing blue leggings as part of their regular uniform (i.e. students have the choice of wearing blue trousers, shorts, skirts or leggings).

Cultures Day
In Early Years this week, the students have been learning about different cultures from around the world. This focus culminated on Wednesday with many students coming to school in the national costumes of other countries – they looked amazing!   Please see the photos on both our Facebook www.facebook.com/TheBritishSchoolOfCostaRica/  and Instagram page.

House Update
We are in the middle of our House football competition during the lunch breaks this week. The matches have been very competitive so far with each team being cheered on by exceptional support from their houses. The finals will be next week.

Lost Property
The amount of lost property continues to be a concern in the Primary School. The amount of water bottles and blue sweatshirts is growing and we cannot return them to their owners, as there are no names on them. We would greatly appreciate your help to ensure that all personal belongings do have your child’s name written on them.  Students are able to look through the lost property box if they lose any of their possessions and regular reminders are made during our weekly assemblies.

Math Olympiad National Finalists for 2022
Congratulations to all the Math Olympiad National Finalists for 2022! COLIBRI Primary Math Olympiad will hold its final on Saturday 26th of November from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm at the Anglo-American School in Concepción de Tres Ríos.  We wish our Year 6 students well in the competition:  Emiliano Robalino, Agustín Mejía and Elena Bonilla.

Secondary

“Empodérala” Project
We would like to congratulate Valentina Sosto (Year 12) for all of her work throughout the pandemic to support those in need.  Over the past couple of years, she has achieved great success in developing links with Kotex as part of her Empodérala Project initiative to supply Kotex pads to women in shelters around Costa Rica. She has also forged links with Fundación Llovera to set up a branding and marketing business to promote Costa Rican women’s rights, to generate donations and arrange self-motivational workshops in women shelters.  Next year, Valentina plans to continue her partnership with Kotex, as she has recently been offered a position with the company to continue to promote and raise awareness for essential basic needs donations and packages to support vulnerable women in Costa Rica. Congratulations Valentina and we wish you every success with the continual development of your project.

Service Learning Projects
After two years, we have fortunately been able to resume the Service Learning projects outside the School.  During this week, Year 9 students had the opportunity to develop an English workshop for children between 9 and 12 years old from the Albergue Hogar Bíblico de la Asociación Roblealto. This experience allowed students to apply their skills and knowledge to support and motivate the learning of a second language.  Another of the projects was planned by Year 7C students, who were working together with the Year 3 generation and managed to get a large amount of donations to support the needs faced by Venezuelan immigrants who are passing through our country.  On Tuesday 18th of October, Year 7C visited the Human Service Station of the Chepe se Baña Foundation located in San José, to deliver all that was collected and to understand even more the difficult situation faced by them.

Mentors 2023
We would like to congratulate the following students on being named as mentors for the 2023 academic year: Federica García, Nilda Oliva, Pablo Fernández, Paula Gutiérrez, Fabián Madrigal, Isabela Arciniegas, George Hays, María Camila Beirute, Rebeca López, Sophia Brohl, Paula Soto, Fernanda Heisse, Cristina Mora, Mauricio Soto and José Alonso Solís.  On Wednesday, our 2023 mentors participated in a handover ceremony with our 2022 mentors.  During this ceremony, the outgoing shared their experiences of being a mentor before presenting the new mentors with their official BSCR mentor badge.
