Computers and Tablets Bring Your Own Device Policy

This policy applies to Secondary only.

For The British School of Costa Rica, our Google Classroom virtual learning environment and the available information technology resources are basic components in the process of learning and teaching. Consequently, it is a requirement that all Secondary School students bring a device that allows them to access our on-line educational facility.

In terms of the device, we do not recommend a specific brand or model, but we do have some specific, minimum parameters for the performance, durability and practicality that will permit the correct choice of device. On the other hand, we would recommend a laptop as the first choice over a tablet.

The Information Technology Deppartment has created the following guidelines for both laptops and tablets:

We would also recommend the following:

  • Software: We don’t require a specific provider, but it is a must to have an updated Antivirus. Also, the software needs to be compatible with services and applications of Google G-Suite for Education.
  • Performance: Since some of the previous requirements are minimum, it is important to take into consideration each one carefully. For example, devices with smaller screens could make internet navigation difficult. Also devices with hardware limitations or generic brands could make the Wi-Fi connection slower or less able to capture the signal in some areas.
  • Compatibility: Chromebook devices must be running Windows 10 and support software installation.
  • Battery duration: The chosen device should be able to last out the majority of the school day.
  • Weight: The student could be capable of moving easily with the device in his/her backpack?
  • Security: The device should offer the facility of being locked by means of a password?
  • Case: The device should have a case that will protect it from hits or falls?
  • Warranty: The device should offer a guarantee that is valid in Costa Rica and offer repair facilities that would be completed within a reasonable time span?

Additional note – Network Access: Parents must take into account the fact that, if the device has 3G, 4G or 5G access via a sim card or similar, then the student will have access to external services and websites that may be inappropriate. The school cannot be held responsible in such cases.
