General

Semana Cívica
We have had a wonderful week celebrating Costa Rica’s Independence. On Tuesday, Early Years students presented some excellent performances for their parents and they certainly impressed everyone with their dancing and public speaking abilities.  On Wednesday, Early Years students led the way with the “Lantern Parade ” around the School. They were also joined by our Primary Marching Band. This was a wonderful and very noisy parade. On Thursday all of Primary and Secondary joined together to celebrate the country’s Independence with more wonderful dancing and singing before enjoying a shared lunch and, for some students, a ride on a mechanical bull.

Jeans Day
On Friday of next week, the whole school will be having a charity fundraising day for a Costa Rica Childhood Cancer Charity (ALCCI). On this day all students can come to school wearing jeans and are encouraged to donate any amount of money to the charity. Students should continue to wear their regular school t-shirt.

Primary

Children’s Day / Talent Show
On Friday of last week, our Learning Community celebrated Children’s Day. This was a very busy and fun packed day culminating with the wonderful Primary Talent Show. This was a superb show with many varied acts which showcased the creative talents that our students have. Thank you to all participants, organising staff members and to the parents of our performers for their support in preparing the students.

Celebrating Learning
Our final week of the quarter will be extremely busy in our Early Years and Primary sections. We have Early Years 2 Exit Points on Monday and Tuesday, our Year 1 Exit Point on Wednesday and the Year 4 Exit Point on Thursday. Also on Thursday, Year 3 will be visiting Irazú volcano as part of their IPC Science theme study.  On Friday, we have our annual Public Speaking Competition for students in Year 4 to Year 7. For the past three years we have seen some amazing speeches and we are certainly looking forward to more wonderful examples of public speaking from the students. Parents of the finalists will be invited to attend the competition, which will be held in the auditorium.

Bakery Sale
The Primary Student Council are organising a small bake sale for Friday to help raise money for a Costa Rica Childhood Cancer Charity (ALCCI). Students in Primary will be able to buy some small baked goods during the lunch break.

Secondary

Science Fair
Congratulations to all Year 6 to Year 8 participants on an outstanding Science Fair.  The learning journey for all students was filled with hard work, effort and commitment and resulted in some wonderful presentations which students, staff and parents all enjoyed.  Thank you to all participants, as well as organising staff members, for creating such an impressive fair.

IB Music Recitals
On Tuesday of next week at 4:00 pm, our Year 12 IB students will be presenting their music to our community. They will be playing music from different genres using instruments such as voice, piano and drums. The presentations serve as part of their IB music coursework and therefore will be recorded. We wish them the best of success.

Spelling contest
On Wednesday of next week, we will be holding the final for the spelling competition in Spanish. Students have gone through a long process of competition and will have a chance to show their skills. Congratulations to all students involved and the best of luck in this final.

NB Talks
Congratulations to each of our Year 11 NB students on the impressive talks that they gave to our Learning Community on Monday.  Audience members were treated to interesting and confidently delivered talks that explored a wide range of relevant issues that our speakers felt passionate about.

Columbia and Yale Universities Visit
On Tuesday 12th of September, we had an impactful visit from representatives of Columbia and Yale Universities. Interested students from Year 9 to 12 who participated in the presentation gained insights into these prestigious institutions and received invaluable tips on the application process to the most selective US universities.

SAT Exams – Year 11 IB, NB and Year 12 Students
The next SAT will be on Saturday 7th of October at the school. The registration deadline is Friday 22nd of September.  The cost for this test is $103 and should be paid online.  The next deadlines are listed in the following link: International SAT Dates 2022-2023. The test is digital now and students can use their own computers and IPad.  We recommend that students who register for the first time and take this test coordinate a meeting with Ana Lourdes Baumgartner, University Counsellor to complete the registration procedure.

The SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) is a standardized test administered by The College Board and which many universities around the world, but especially in the United States, take into consideration as either a requirement or as an optional part of the university application process.  Should you have any question, please contact Ana Lourdes at abaumgartner@bscr.ed.cr. SAT Practice and Preparation Information
